Question by shawn: I bought a memory foam mattress that is too firm, so I want to add a memory foam topper to it.?
The mattress I bought is 11″…. 8″ hard foam and 3″ memory foam on top. Should I put a 2″ or 3″ topper on top of the bed? What density should I be looking for?

Sure you can put a memory foam topper on any mattress.

Density is only one measurement of foam
ILD or IFD is another factor. I would not get to caught up in that. 3lb is not as good as 5 lb, but both are better than most standard PU foams. ILD or IFD the greater the number the firmer the foam.

What you should be looking for is comfort Not A Number. Try different toppers till you find the proper one that gives you the desired feel that you are looking for. Hope this helps

Question by Niti: I want to buy a double mattress that can be folded. Any suggestions?
I often have guests coming over and would like to buy a mattress(preferably double) that can be folded and put away. Which is a good place to buy it from and which brand? I dont want to spend more that £60 but want something that will be comfortable and will last. I have been searching over the internet but haven’t found anyhting.

Try looking at futon mattresses. They can be folded.

Softness doesn’t depend on density in a simple way. Softness depends on how much weight the foam can withstand. The more weight it can withstand, the more firm. However, density (D) is defined as the mass (M) of an object in grams divided by the volume (V) in cubic centimeters, so the equation looks like this: D=M/V. Find out the volume, which is length X width X height, and the mattress store can tell you it’s mass. They’ll probably already know the density of the mattresses. Basically, the more mass it has, the more dense. If you compare mattresses that are the same volume, the one that that has less mass is less dense. Weight is usually used as a synonym for mass. Question by mike m: Do you use a “memory foam” style mattress? Or have in the past? I want opinions!?
I’m going to but a new mattress and saw the Serta memory-foam models @ EQ3. I am asking for likes/dislikes. I’ll be sleeping alone, mostly, but am also curious about ease of sleep and “other activities” on this foam. Serious question!

Thanks to the commitment of a corporation out of Sweden that that had worked closely with NASA in designing the original memory foam mattress, they finally perfected the technology in the 1980′s. This newest adaptation was made using a spongy, gel like plastic whose composite open cells could deform under pressure and reshape back to its original form.

In a drive to establish how effective it was, one brand called Tempur-Pedic was sold to hospitals and widely accepted. Many patients who have slept on the memory foam mattress have gone on record stating that this has reduced significantly the pressure on joints when they lie down. They have also confirmed that the sleeping surface also provides very good support for the spine and back.

This new concept of memory foam mattress had another problem when first introduced in the market in the early 1990′s. The issue then was that they were expensive. But this soon changed as other companies were able to produce like products.

This is offered as a side note, but the story of the memory foam mattress doesn’t end here. As it became more widespread, it became apparent that it had more benefits than just for the back and sleeping. It was found to be useful in other areas such as: mattress toppers, pillows, automobile seat padding, infant cribs, car seats, wheelchair cushions, hip pads, movie theater seating, and more.

Prices for a mattress like this have a range from 0 to 0. What you will pay will depend on the density that you wish to buy. The thicker versions are more expensive. The most preferred seems to be the ones that weigh 3-5.5 lbs since this is what match most budgets best.
